▶ What makes these banners special? After years of requests, I'm finally offering my corn husk 'hoja picado' banners. Each corn husk is unique and I can only use the smoothest & flattest areas of the husk. Sorting the husks is time-consuming. Unlike traditional tissue paper papel picado, (which is cut in stacks, creating multiples with 1 cutting), corn husk flags are cut one delicate flag at a time. Cutting is much more time-consuming. Next, the banners are assembled. Some of the flags curl up after cutting, along the hoja's natural curve. I must reinforce them from behind with hand cut sturdy pieces of corn husk- so they will hang flat. Each mariposa flag is unique. The tassels are hand cut & rolled while the hoja is fresh. These curly pieces take days to dry before they can be assembled into the whimsical tassels. Finally, after hours and days of sorting, curling, cutting, & assembling-- each banner is a handcrafted piece of art.
