"I thought about what papel picado represents- the breath of life. And how we hang it to commemorate our lives, and in the ceremonies that make us US. From weddings to graduations to ofrendas, I have made papel picado for all of life’s moments: from birth to death and everything in between. I thought about how beautiful we are and how that is always worth celebrating, proudly.

So, yesterday the creation of these Brown Is Beautiful banners came to me. My Dad used to say this to us kids, growing up. I wish I could hang this message in every school, every library, everywhere. And when the gentle breath of a breeze flutters the flags, that message will whisper into the world: "Our existence is a blessing."
